About San Sebastián
May to October is the ideal season. Summer (July-August) is the liveliest time, with Semana Grande and the Jazz Festival, but also the most expensive. May-June and September offer good weather and fewer tourists. Winter is mild but rainy; the Tamborrada (20 January) is a unique experience.
In San Sebastián they aren’t called “tapas”, they’re called pintxos. The tradition is to go from bar to bar, trying one or two at each, with a txakoli, cider or zurito (small beer). The pintxos sit on the bar; some you take yourself, others you order hot. You pay at the end in each bar. Budget: €20-30 for a route of 4-5 bars. The Old Town and Gros are the main areas.
Yes, Zurriola beach (5 minutes from the apartment) is one of the best urban surf spots in Europe. Schools such as Pukas Surf Eskola, Zurriola Surf Eskola and Bera Bera Surf offer lessons and board and wetsuit hire on the beach.
For the city, no. San Sebastián is compact and everything is less than a 15-minute walk away. The Dbus is accessible and covers the whole city. A car is worth it for day trips around Gipuzkoa or the French Basque Country.
  • Hondarribia (20 min): a fishing town with a medieval old quarter
  • French Basque Country (30-50 min): Biarritz, Bayonne, Saint-Jean-de-Luz
  • Zumaia Flysch (40 min): spectacular 60-million-year-old cliffs
  • Getaria and Zarautz (25 min): txakoli, grilled fish and surf
  • Astigarraga cider houses (10 min): January-April season
  • San Juan de Gaztelugatxe (1 h): a hermitage above the sea
English is common in the hospitality sector. French is well understood given how close the border is (30 km). The official languages are Spanish and Basque. You don’t need Basque to get around, but you’ll see bilingual signage.
